Take the A7 South to Galasheils and visit Abbotsford House where Sir Walter Scott lived. Continue on to Melrose on the A6091 and visit Melrose Abbey where the heart of Robert the Bruce is buried. Continue on the A6091 and on to the A68 - turn Left over the bridge and view the wonderful disused arched railway bridge. Turn Right and follow the signs for Dryburgh Abbey Hotel and visit Dryburgh Abbey. Earl Haig the famous commander of British forces in the Great War is buried here. Now follow the signs for Scott's View where Sir Walter Scott got his inspiration for many of his books. Continue through Jedburgh - visit the ruined Abbey and visitor centre. Return to the A68 (North) then turn Right on to the A698 to Kelso. This is a traditional Scottish market town. Visit Floors Castle, home of the Duke of Roxburgh, with the famous rose garden and the ruins of Kelso Abbey Join the A6089 out of Kelso and then the A697. Follow the signs for Lauder and Thirlestane Castle. On leaving the Castle, travel through Lauder and rejoin the A68 (North). Turn Left on to the B6368 and visit Soutra Aisle, the site of a medieval hospital dating from 1164. Here, there are some of the best views in Southern Scotland. Rejoin the A68 back to Midlothian.
